adventures in letterpress

impressions :: thanks!

Thanks everyone for answering my question about deep impressions vs. a slight kiss [I like that term, thanks sweetcheese:]!  It seems like a lot of you, I generally tend to prefer a deep impression.  I asked the question because as I was printing this weekend, it dawned on me that everyone might not like the deep impression like I do.  So, thanks for the feedback!  Here are a few things I printed this weekend + added to the shop ...

Party duck

I do want to note though -- as my experience is building I'm realizing I do prefer the kiss impression for more intricate designs + text heavy pieces + the deep impression for more simple motifs + larger areas of type [like the above].

Thanks again for your feedback.  Hope you had a good weekend!

question for you

This is for letterpress lovers out there...I have a question about impressions.  What's your preference?  Do you like a deep impression or minimal indentation?
 Impression
Its actually a pretty heated debate among letterpress printers. I have a preference + I was just curious to what your's is.

[photos above are of some custom projects which I promise I'll share soon!]

mixing ink

I love every last bit of the letterpress process - including mixing ink.  It makes me feel like a kid in art class ...Mixing ink
I spent some time last night mixing a bunch of ink I'll need for several projects I'm printing this weekend.  Yay for pantone + being able to match colors exactly [or at least pretty darn close]

thank you, jane

Thank you, Jane, for the beyond-nice post about my work.  This thanks is for you ... and inspired by you :] ...
Thank you jane
Jane is right up there at the top of my list of really great people I've met via blogging/etsy.  Not only is she super nice, she's got impeccable taste [especially in paper goods].  So, when she asked me to do some custom letterpress work, I was flattered + super excited as I knew it would be just my style [simple, clean + a touch of modern].   As soon as she receives her goods, I'll be sure to share.  Thanks again, J!

i *heart* letterpress type

In letterpress you can either use old school type or get plates made of essentially any design you want.  While I plan on using mostly plates, I knew I wanted to use type as well.  There's just something about it I love ...
I heart type
I found this great sans serif on Ebay + just love it.  You'll be seeing a lot of it from me. :]

Shop to be updated with my first round of letterpress stuff within a week or so!

vintage clocks

My little letterpress workspace is in our garage and has no clock...and far too many times I lose track of time [I guess that what happens when you're having fun ;].  So, I am in need of a clock ...Vintage clocksI was thinking I'd love something vintagey or vintage-inspired.   I found a couple on EBay + the middle one is from Target but I really love that little clock at the top in the photo [via decor8].  Anyone seen anything like that vintage or new?  Would love it if you shot me a little note! :]

letterpress winner

I've been pressing away, working on a bunch of things including some wedding projects, personal work + goods for my shop ...Letterpress winnder I've also been a busy bee working to formalize things from a business perspective...as soon as I have a few things in place, I'll be sure to share!

And I chose someone at random [closed my eyes + used my mouse to select a comment ;] for my little giveaway + its the lovely Mrs. French who said..."I'm feeling lucky...we'll see. I love everything about letterpress, the texture, the color, the sophistication....love, love, love it!"

Happy Monday!

[My sister kept me company this weekend while I was working + took that b/w picture :]

my first letterpress + a giveaway!

Well, here it is...my first letterpress work.  After lots of tinkering + experimenting, this is what I came up with ... First letterperss I'll be adding a name [maybe in brown or gray?] to the flower stationery for a custom order but generally ok with how it all turned out.  I still have a lot to figure out -- like getting just the right deep impression, getting enough but not too much ink, etc.

And speaking of custom stationery, let's do a little giveaway!  Just my way of thanking you all for your enthusiasm over my letterpress endeavor + for visiting my little blog.  This will also be a good way for me to practice!  So, leave a comment + share with everyone what you generally love about letterpress.  I'll choose someone early next week.  And the winner will get a set of 25+ personalized letterpress stationery cards + whatever else I come up with!

i *heart* ikea

Ikea really is the best.  I swung by there to pick up a few things for my letterpress workspace ...I heart ikea letterpress workspaceI was super excited because they had white canisters, not quite as cute as the ones I posted about...but good enough!  I also totally lucked out + got that great heavy duty table in the "as-is" section [LOVE that section!].   Now I'm waiting for a few more odds + ends pieces of equipment to finally get going.  I knew this going in but I can now officially confirm that letterpress is not a cheap endeavor. ;]

there she is

After driving to Chicago + back this weekend [1400 miles!?], there she is ...
Pilot pressShe is in fabulous condition with everything in tact.  A big thanks to my little sister who made the trip with me.  It was a long ride but well worth it + loads of fun.

I'm now working to get equipment + tools together.  And stay tuned!  I'll be doing a couple of custom stationery giveaways [to allow me to practice a bit + thank you for all your letterpress enthusiasm].  Happy Monday!
